When we have the chance, we take it to see Mother Nature at her finest. The Wisconsin Dells is one of those places. A beautiful area where the cliffs were carved by the river that flows through this region. Today, we took a river cruise of the Upper Dells. Where once the river ran dangerous with rapids, it is now quiet and calm; giving way to enjoying the peace that nature brings.
A two hour journey up the river we heard about the formation of the river and stopped at Witch’s Gulch and Stand Rock (made famous by H. H. Bennett’s photograph of his son jumping the formations). We hiked a short trail into Witch’s Gulch seeing more “potholes” formed by the swirling river. We even were blessed to see a young bald eagle sitting watch over the river.
The Wisconsin Dells are a great place for families as they have a ton of activities to stay busy. However, I caution you that you may go broke! Everything from nature hikes to various boat rides on the river to numerous waterparks in which to choose. Go carting, magic shows, mini-golf, horseback riding and the list goes on. Maybe we will take in a game of golf still yet before we say good-bye to The Dells.
Looks like an awesome place to go. Looks a little scary though, with the deep and skinny paths. I would be nervous thinking about a flash flood. Were the boys able to go with you on these hikes?
Well, some of these were in an area called Witch’s Gulch. Story is the natives thought the area was haunted and warned the settlers not to travel back in here. However, a photographer was a bit more adventurous and decided to explore the area. Unfortunately, he couldn’t navigate the waterfall until winter when it froze over and was able to use a pick axe to make his way up and back into the rocks. Shortly thereafter, they built the walkway and it has been a stopping point on the boat tours since the 1870’s or something like that.
No puppies as we had to ride a boat to get there. Not allowed 🙁
