Today we headed to another one of our nation’s national parks. In 1903, President Roosevelt established the seventh national park, Wind Cave. To be honest, neither of us had ever heard of this park. That really is sad that we are not as familiar with more geographically significant places in our own country. I find this is rather common with most people.
Unfortunately, what this park is most famous for we were unable to experience and that is the caves. The elevators need replaced and they have been inoperable the entire summer so no access to the caves. I won’t lie, we were pretty bummed that we missed seeing them. I guess it is a reason to make another trip this way next year.
However, we took advantage of the other part of the park, the above ground. We took a short hike on the Rankin Ridge Nature Trail which leads to one of the highest points in the park. What laid before us was vast prairie. The terrain is diverse, made up of rolling hills, pine trees and grasslands. The multiple colors of the grass catch your eye as it dances around the prairie floor. The majestic bison are once again abundant here and roam freely. If you are looking for quiet and peace, this is unequivocally a perfect place for you to reset yourself. Take it all in.
That looks and sounds inspiring. Now if I could just get your father to retire we could catch up to you. Then we could work on getting him to hike with us.
