Enjoying the Springs

Last week we spent it in Colorado Springs, CO.  We stayed on the Air Force Academy which is absolutely lovely.  It feels like you are in the woods no matter where you go on the base.  Instantly, I felt a connection to the area.  I told the hubby that had he been stationed here at the time of his retirement, we most likely would have stayed.  Toward the end of the week, he commented that he really liked the area too.  I won’t lie, I am drawn to the city and would seriously consider settling down there.

First, the views are stunning and nothing could be better than waking to the mountains in your back yard.  Second, there is so much to do in and around the city.  On the west side just on the outskirts, you wouldn’t even know you were within city limits.  It is a sanctuary of nature offering outdoor space abound.  While I had to take a trip to Houston in the middle of our stay, we were able to venture out to a couple of the nearby sights.

Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods sits at the base of the mountains and is a wonderful place to get out and enjoy the fresh air. There is a scenic drive as well as trails for hiking or mountain biking.  Another local sight is located in a city park and called 7 Falls.  258 steps to the top of the falls allow for a unique view of the water formation and is one heck of a workout!

Finally, we drove the 19 mile road to reach Pike’s Peak.  Just one of Colorado’s 14ers, at 14,155 ft in elevation, it is listed as the 31st highest peak in the state.  Incredible!  But oh, was it cold as the winds were whipping up pretty good.  Needless-to-say, we didn’t hang around up top for too long. What a rush as you drive up the narrow road that has very few guardrails and you have the ability to look straight down the embankment.   Hard to believe they have an auto race up this road.  Crazy!   Honestly, I didn’t really want to leave there.

  1. We lived in Colorado Springs when I was young and my Dad was in the service. Unfortunately I don’t remember much except going to kindergarten there. It sounds beautiful though, wish I remembered more. The photos you took are beautiful, thank you for posting them.
