It Is Well With My Soul

A little over a week ago, Al and I enjoyed our most ambitious hike: Angels Landing in Zion National Park.  For several years, I have seen these amazing photos of this hike and heard other people’s stories.  Yes, we had ample opportunities to tackle this hike while living in Las Vegas, but it has been within this last year that I became motivated to take on the challenge.  It did NOT disappoint.

As we started out, I was full of adrenaline and excited to get up the mountain.  It did not take very long before I slowed down significantly as the climb became more and more difficult.  The first two miles was switch back after switch back as we gradually traversed the side of the mountain.  I had to take breaks to catch my breath at every turn.  In fact, my husband dubbed me with my hiking nickname: Weezer!  I will even admit that it was intimidating to have fellow hikers cruise by me with ease.  But I was determined to see the hike through.

We finally reached Scouts Landing near the top where many people decide not to go any further as the next half mile is especially challenging.  This section of the hike is not for anyone who is afraid of heights as you literally scramble and walk along the ledge of the mountain.  This section is referred to as the Chain Section of the hike.  Just the week prior to our visit, this section of the hike had been closed due to COVID, but had recently opened before our arrival.  I can see why it was closed as there is absolutely no way to social distance.

This .5 mile section increases in elevation by 1400 ft.  It is steep and narrow.  Chains are placed along the trail to help with the assent and descent.  The trail was crowed so we had to take turns allowing folks to pass in either direction.  It may have taken us a little longer than most to climb the mountain, but we did it and I felt AMAZING!  It was such a huge accomplishment for me and I felt blessed just to be able to complete it.  My husband is awesome as he is so patient with me and I am truly a lucky girl to have such an incredible man in my life willing to take on these adventures with me.  Standing on top and overlooking into the valley, I can honestly say, “It is well with my soul.”

He is the best!

Yes, you would’ve had to hold my hand and blind fold me to get up there on that narrow part. But what a wonderful sight. So glad you made it.

  2. Congratulations on sticking with it and making it to the top! You are much braver than me, as the height thing would have done me in! I love your shirt and that it is well with your soul….one of my very favorite hymns. ❤❤❤
