No Particular Place to Go

We made our way to the lower peninsula of Michigan yesterday into Traverse City and camped out at Wal-Mart for the night. Hey, don’t judge me…it is cheap. We followed Hwy 31, known as the Gold Coast Hwy that runs from Mackinac City to New Buffalo. It is a very scenic drive as much of it runs along the Lake Michigan shoreline. We opted to stop in Traverse City because we had not been up this direction before and just wanted to check it out.

This morning, we reserved a spot at the KOA for the night and headed back into town. Not sure exactly what we were searching for, we drove through the old town and warehouse districts. Then I suggested we check out one of the lighthouses in the area. There are at least five lighthouses in the Traverse City region, which means you can make a day out of touring lighthouses alone.

Two are located on islands while another two were about 35 miles away; therefore, our decision was made based on proximity. We set out to see the Old Mission Pointe Lighthouse out on the Old Mission Peninsula. Built in 1870, it was in service for 63 years. We even got to climb up into the lantern room. Unlike other lighthouses, this lighthouse had a female light keeper at one time.

What we had not anticipated, was just how lovely this 18 mile drive would turn out to be on the peninsula. Mind you, the region is known as being the ‘Cherry capital of the world.’ I can see why as there are cherry and apple orchards all along the area. I really wanted to stop at one of the small farm stands and pick-up some fresh fruit, but my eyes are bigger than our refrigerator! Unfortunately, we already have enough produce in the trailer that needs eaten before I buy more. I digress.

Now the same fertile soil that makes this region ideal to grow the fruit trees is also a perfect area to grow grapes! Old Mission Peninsula has 11 wineries. On a whim, we stopped for some wine tasting at the Chateau Grand Traverse winery. For a whopping $5 per person, we each got to try our choice of five wines. And I might add, there are some ridiculously, huge (and gorgeous) homes along the peninsula! Our day began with an unknown and ended up with unsuspected surprises . You never know where life may take you when you are not even searching.
