Pictured Rocks

Chapel Rock

If you flip over the Michigan quarter, you will see a picture of this Pictured Rock National Lakeshore landmark, Chapel Rock. This afternoon we arrived in Munising, MI in the Upper Peninsula to spend some time at Pictured Rocks. After we got our campsite set up, we headed for our scheduled boat tour which is really the best way to see the rocks. To get up close and personal, take a kayak. Since it was getting late and cold, boat tour it is for us.

The rock cliffs are painted with multiple colors from the minerals found in the soil in this region after water leaches through the rocks. The red is iron, the white is calcium and the black is magnesium. The park gets it’s name from the “pictures” on the cliff sides that people envision.

The picture at left is that of Chapel Rock. The lone tree on top of the rock cannot survive; however, look closely to the left and you will notice the tree root that connects to the mainland. Water and wind continue to shape these rocks as they have for hundreds of years. On the opposite side of the bay is Grand Island. Also a protected national recreation area, the island offers solitude and pristine wilderness. On the bank stands the East Channel Lighthouse built in 1863. Long retired, she offers a glimpse into the history of the region.

Much of Painted Rocks park can only be accessed via foot, so be up for some walking if you really want to explore it on a more intimate level. Tomorrow we may hike further into the park or ferry over the Grand Island and explore it’s secrets. And I’m very excited to watch the leaves changing as autumn is upon us.

Beautiful. I love the history lessons along with photos. I’ve never imagined such beauty in that part of the states.

    1. I think we often have wrong ideas about other parts of the country. That is why this trip is great to be able to see the beauty around the country

  2. Janine and I hiked from Grand Marais to Munising after I proposex to her. Beautiful memories of our experiences on this trail. Grand Island is another place Ive spent some time at. Worrhy place to spend time.
